Is LipiFlow® right for you?

Most people (over 80%) who suffer from chronic dry eye have meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This is a common eye condition and form of evaporative dry eye in which patients have obstructed meibomian glands. When working properly, these glands produce an oil (meibum) that mixes with tears. Tears without this oil are prone to evaporating quickly, thus causing the eyes to dry out.

For decades, eye doctors had no practical solution for unblocking clogged meibomian glands. Thankfully, that has all changed with LipiFlow. Our doctors can use an Ocular Surface Interferometer to evaluate your lipids and diagnose MGD. To find out if you have MGD and whether LipiFlow can relieve your dry eyes, please schedule a consultation.

TOP-OF-THE-LINE EQUIPMENT

Advanced Technology & Machinery

Our technology was selected for its superior performance and exceptional results. At TRES VISION Group, we pride ourselves in using the best equipment available to get you the results you’re looking for.

The Activator

The Activators deliver Vectored Thermal Pulse to the inner part of your eyelid and uses gentle adaptive pressure on the outer portions of the lid to encourage production of lipids. These devices are built for a single usage making them sterile and safe. The Activators fit comfortable onto the eye, making the 12-minute procedure pain-free for the patient.
Why We Use The Activator

  • Protective – It shields the structures of your eye from damage during the procedure.
  • Comfortable – You will experience minimal to no discomfort when being treated using the LipiFlow Activators.
Ocular Surface Interferometer

The Ocular Surface Interferometer uses digital imaging technology to take images that show the thickness of the lipid layer. Dr. Tres can then use this to determine if you’re suffering from dry eye. It can be used during a non-invasive procedure that takes five minutes to complete. Evaluation of lipids takes place both during and after the procedure to determine the best treatment option for you. Measurements include blink dynamics, meibomian gland structure, and lipid layer thickness.
Why We Use the Ocular Surface Interferometer

  • Accuracy –Measures thickness with nanometer accuracy.
  • Reporting –Gives us a better visual and improved ability to diagnose and prescribe a treatment plan.
Thermal Pulsation System

The Thermal Pulsation System is the computer behind the treatment delivered to The Activators. The system in its entirety works together to deliver heat and pressure to the meibomian glands. The computer-controlled treatment is monitored with multiple sensors to give a more accurate treatment. This means you are more likely to see the results you desired take effect.

  • Accuracy –Sensors monitor the entire treatment process and can adjust the treatment accordingly.
  • Proven Results –Studies have shown an increase in lipid products with no significant regression in patients who receive the LipiFlow treatment for dry eyes.

FAQ

Here are some common questions about our LipiFlow treatment for dry eyes.

  • How long does LipiFlow last?

LipiFlow is a treatment option for dry eyes but not a permanent solution. It has long-lasting effects of up to two years before further treatments may need to be implemented. Keep in mind that results will vary from patient to patient.

  • How painful is LipiFlow treatment?

LipiFlow is designed to be comfortable and you will experience relatively no discomfort over the duration of the 12-minute procedure.

  • How often should the LipiFlow treatment be repeated?

The frequency of repeated LipiFlow treatments will vary from patient to patient. LipiFlow treatments can last for up to two years. Your ophthalmologist will be able to better determine how often you need treatment.

  • What does LipiFlow feel like?

LipiFlow administers therapeutic massaging movements and warming to the lids using the Activator. You will experience light pressure and warming to the eyelids.

  • What is recovery from LipiFlow like?

There is no downtime associated with LipiFlow, which means you can resume your normal activities, including driving and going to work, as soon as your treatment is finished.

  • Is LipiFlow covered by insurance?

Most insurance plans (medical and vision) do not cover LipiFlow. Our practice does offer financing options to help interested patients pay for their treatments in installments.

  • How do I prepare for a LipiFlow treatment?

Our eye doctors recommend that you avoid using artificial tears, eye ointments, or Restasis for a full day before your appointment. Do not swim in a chlorinated pool prior to your appointment either. If you normally wear contact lenses, do not wear them to your appointment.

  • What are my options if my dry eye is not caused by obstructed meibomian glands?

Other treatments are more appropriate for patients whose dry eye is caused by something other than MGD. Our doctors can devise a customized treatment that consists of eye inserts, eyedrops, and/or medication to help you get the relief you deserve.

  • Are there consequences to not treating dry eye?

Dry eye can cause problems that are more significant than discomfort. Over time, your eyes can become inflamed and vulnerable to corneal abrasions and ulcers. Your quality of vision may also suffer if you ignore severe dry eye.

  • How do tears benefit my eyes?

Although people often think of tears in relation to crying, tear production is constant. In a single year, your eyes produce 15 to 30 gallons of tears. Tears keep your eyes clean and can clear out dust and other particles, including bacteria. Just as importantly, by keeping your eyes moist, tears also help you to focus light better for clearer vision. Tear production is known to decline as you age, which is part of why older people are more likely to have dry eye.
